Cathedral Caverns State Park
In 1952 a man named Jay Gurley discovered this massive cave. He sold everything he had to raise money to buy the cave, and then he worked for a decade to open it to the public. A shortage of funds and the huge job of keeping the cave in "showable" shape led to its closing in 1982. In 1987 the state of Alabama purchased the cave and it was restored and reopened to the public. Today visitors journey into the cavern through one of the largest entrances in the world – it is more than 24 meters high. This cavern also claims to have the world's largest stalagmite, called Goliath. The column of stone is 60 feet tall and 200 feet wide. 220 million year old fossils decorate the walls of this amazing natural chamber.
